ADHD and Dental Care

Patients with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) need dental care that accommodates their special needs.

According to Children and Adults with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, cavities are the most common dental issue patients with ADHD face.

This is because routing habits, such as brushing and flossing their teeth, can be difficult. It’s also the result of the medications many ADHD patients take, which can lead to changes in appetite and diet.

Finding a dentist who has experience treating patients with ADHD can be difficult because there aren’t a lot. Most dentists don’t have extensive experience treating patients with special needs.

That’s where Believe Dental comes in.

Special accommodations must be made when it comes to treating patients with ADHD. At Believe Dental, you as the parent or caregiver for a patient with ADHD can stay with the patient throughout the visit. If you inform us that the patient has ADHD, we can ensure your time in the waiting room isn’t too long.

To reduce stress for the patient further, we also offer overhead TVs above each treatment chair; and you can also bring any comfort items, such as toys or blankets, that will help ease your child’s anxiety.

In the event that sedation is required, Believe Dental is fully equipped to handle it. We have licensed anesthesiologists on staff, and they will perform an evaluation on the patient to determine which type of sedation – local, moderate, or general – is the safest.

If you would like to schedule a desensitization or familiarization visit, please give any of our offices a call above or fill out this form. We have offices in Austin, Houston, and San Antonio.

A comfortable dental experience is key to ensuring good oral hygiene in patients with ADHD. Believe Dental is your partner in comfortable dental experiences for patients with special needs.
